This summer, we launched our Sustainable Earth Small Business Awards (SESBA) and selected 15 winners who showcased outstanding sustainability commitments. Our new podcast, The Green Scene, dives into conversations with SESBA winners about their journey as sustainable business owners.
In our eighth episode of The Green Scene, Resilience Developers | Reconstructing How We Renovate, we sat down with Jason Laros, CEM and founder of Resilience Developers. In the pursuit of building a reliable contracting company, Laros layers in sustainable construction practices and circular thinking to help construct a more efficient built environment. From deconstruction and repurposing materials, to digital business cards, the young company is trying a wide range of practices to see what sticks. Laro’s vision for Resilience Developers is that their trials, errors, and victories can be used by other businesses to develop less wasteful, more holistic projects.
Mission Deconstruction
Laros began his journey by compiling his skills and passion for creating positive change. He wanted to create a contracting company that did what they know, but in a sustainable way. “It doesn’t really matter what you’re doing. There is always a better way to do something, a more sustainable way to do something.” Said Laros. So, Resilience Developers was formed. “Demolition is not a part of the company’s vocabulary, it’s deconstruction.” Everywhere they can, the contractors reuse or repurpose materials from builds. While the company is small and doesn’t have the space to collect all items from projects, they have found that some materials have quick turnarounds. Laros and his team also look to their supply chain to cut environmental impacts and costs. They have scouted the used and repurposed shops in Tucson, Arizona, where the company is based. Laros pointed out that sometimes the used items have better bones that make them last longer than the new, quick, cheap materials.
